Ocean Sub-Surface Mapping

During the CIOERT expedition, high resolution bathymetric maps collected during previous multibeam echosounder surveys will be used to guide the submersible and ROV diving. Data collected during the cruise are input to Geographic Information System (GIS) software and overlayed on the bathymetric map. Standard three-dimensional graphing software enable placing all observations in a precisely positioned volume, which can also be bridged with the GIS software.

The CIOERT team is using 3-dimensional maps like this one of the Tortugas Banks, to pinpoint sites of interest for investigation. Data archives can be accessed for historical information collected on each site, time synchronized to GPS for a high degree of positional accuracy.
