FLOSEE II: Exploring and mapping shelf frontiers off south Florida
In August 2010, in the wake of the Macondo well site explosion and spill event, Harbor Branch at Florida Atlantic University led an expedition to explore deep reefs in the eastern Gulf of Mexico off Florida-- visit the expedition Web site for objectives, highlights and products at http://cioert.org/flosee. These pages are dedicated to the Florida Shelf Edge Exploration II (FLOSEE II) expedition aboard the NOAA ship Nancy Foster, which departed Key West, FL, on September 12, 2011. Leg 1 will visit Pulley Ridge, a drowned reef complex and marine protected area on the West Florida Shelf, returning to Key West on September 20. Leg 2 will depart Key West on Sep. 22 and visit deep-sea coral habitats off Miami and the Florida Keys, ending in Key West on Sep. 30. The exploration asset is the Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV), Kraken2, operated by the University of Connecticut.
